An integrated OR is an operating room that has an
ergonomically designed and purposely built system that increases efficiency in
order to reduce procedure time and improve surgery success rates. An integrated
OR is also designed to include video, lighting, recording and information
sharing equipment integrated via a central integration component. Equipment
such as surgical lighting, surgical displays, picture archiving and
communication system (PACS) monitors, surgical booms, surgical tables and
insufflators are also regularly found inside ORs and are therefore included as
a part of the cost of a new, fully integrated OR setup. In addition, surgical
camera systems and related equipment such as light sources, surgical
headlights, image capture devices and medical printers are an integral part of
a modern OR.
Hybrid ORs are newer, specialized integrated ORs that
feature large UHD displays and a fixed imaging system that is integrated to an
advanced surgical table, which supports a variety of different procedures.
There is high demand for high level integration in ORs throughout the U.S.,
especially for the newer hybrid suites. These multipurpose rooms come equipped
with many of the state-of-the-art products in the market today such as fixed
imaging systems, image guided surgical tables and large 8 megapixel displays.
Overall, growth is expected to continue over the forecast period, driven by
technological advancements and the increasing desire for OR integration.
Since 1992, Stryker has led the market for OR
integration. Since then, numerous competitors, starting with Karl Storz in
1998, have entered the market, yet Stryker has managed to remain the dominant
player. Over the last few years, competition has been increasing and the gap
between Stryker and the rest of the competitors has been slowly shrinking.
Newer competitors are offering lucrative high tech integration options as the
standards for what is considered full integration continue to get higher. The
advent of new technologies such as 4K along with voice control will continue to
drive this market. Wireless systems are already available in the market and the
technology has aided in the continued market growth. Also, manufacturers are
continually improving the quality and functionality of surgical microscopes.
This is necessary to justify the high pricing of the systems as well as to
entice facilities to upgrade their old microscopes. The introduction of 3D
technology to the visualization systems of surgical microscopes is expected to
increase ASP and help market growth.
